Day 4: Boundaries and Forgiveness Can Coexist

Romans 12:17-21
Never pay back evil with more evil. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honest. Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone. Never take revenge, dear friends. Leave that to God’s anger, for it is written: "I will take revenge; I will pay them back," says the Lord. Instead, if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals of shame on their heads. Don't let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.

Above all else, guard your heart, for it determines the course of your life.

Forgiveness and reconciliation are not the same. Forgiveness is a solo venture, something you do to free your own heart. Reconciliation is a joint venture requiring repentance, change, and safety from both parties. You can fully forgive someone and still maintain healthy boundaries. Paul says, "If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace." That phrase "as far as it depends on you" acknowledges that peace isn't always fully in your control. Forgiveness frees your heart from carrying what God never meant you to hold, but it doesn't require you to expose yourself to continued harm. You can release someone from your mental prison without unlocking your front door to them. Today, ask God for wisdom to discern when forgiveness requires distance and when restoration is possible.
